Well, I navigated around the Library of Congress site and I was impressed with how much is available.
One of my thoughts about using this website with my Special Ed high school students was that my students do not usually get that deep and specific in their research. In general, my students are slower in their processing speeds so we are looking at the broad view in my World History class, hoping to finish the book so that we get the whole picture. However, because Washington, DC is not likely to be one of our field trips, it would be great for them to see online some of the original documents such as the Declaration of Independence.
Also, I did find information on the geography of Samoa and the recent tsunami there. My students would be interested in that.
Another site I could use with my Special Ed English students was Poetry 180, A Poem for a Day for High School students. One of my favorite poems was Do You Have Any Advice for Those of Us Just Starting Out. The message was to stay in touch with your inner child. I also liked the first poem Turtle. I wanted to print out a copy but it said that you had to get the author's permission to print a copy. I wondered if they could tell if you made a copy. For instance, itunes lets me know they keep track of how many copies I make. Is technology watching us?

I think the Library of Congress would be a very useful resource for a Special Day Class. I think that because there are so many visuals and audio materials it would be very user friendly for people with different learning styles that do not necesarily learn well with printed material.

ReplyDeleteI was especially interested that you found information about the recent tsunami in Samoa. I was not aware that they would have something so very current. I also think it is great to have access to pictures of orginal maps, etc. since we are all located so far from DC and a field trip seems highly unlikely, especially in these economic times.

ReplyDeleteYou make an interesting point. I wonder how much of what we search is tracked. They say our Safeway club cards keep track of what we buy and all, but there are always so many mix ups with automation and technology. I wonder what they would really do with all of this information and how accurate it really is...

ReplyDeleteI agree with your comment on how the photos of primary documents can so effective for students who may never get a chance to travel far. I could not find the info. on the recent tsunami- I will have to look again to find the more current material.

ReplyDeleteI have had a good experience with Jim Crow lessons using the photos from the Library of Congress website.
As for needing permission to copy, I guess you have to respect it. But you could post the link and let students peek at it that way!

ReplyDeleteI like the point you make about SPED students and how they sometimes don't seek breadth. The reason I like the comment is because it is true also of my general ed students. Hurry up and finish seems to have become the mantra of too many students.
Thanks for the poem titles. I will look them up and may use them in my classes. I think the students (based on the titles) will get into them.
I also like how you connected a current event with this assignment.
